Speaker Biographies

Charlie Rhuda, Novogradac & Company LLP

Charles A. Rhuda III is a partner in the Boston office of Novogradac & Company LLP. He has more than 25 years of experience in the real estate industry, predominately in affordable housing and historic rehabilitation. Mr. Rhuda works with tax credit developers, managers, syndicators and investors on structuring, financing, syndicating and disposing/restructuring both low-income housing (LIHTC) and historic rehabilitation tax credit (HTC) transactions, in addition to providing traditional audit and tax services. He is a frequent speaker at regional and national seminars on topics in the affordable housing and historic rehabilitation industries, as well as a contributor to industry trade publications. Mr. Rhuda graduated from Pace University with a bachelor’s degree in public accounting. He is licensed in New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland as a certified public accountant.

Brad Calloway, First NBC Bank

Brad Calloway is an executive vice president and tax credits manager at First NBC Bank. Through this position, he leads the tax credit programs for First NBC Bank, which includes origination and structuring investments in new markets (NMTC), historic (HTC) and low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC). His responsibilities include leverage lending and equity investments in addition to providing NMTC allocations through the First NBC Community Development Fund LLC, First NBC Bank’s community development entity. Since 2009, First NBC Bank has initiated and invested approximately $250 million in tax credit investments, involving 101 different project developments exceeding $800 million with primary emphasis on HTCs and NMTCs. Mr. Calloway has been responsible for the application, award and placement of the First NBC Community Development Fund’s allocations totaling $118 million. Mr. Calloway has extensive experience in twinning multiple funding sources including not only federal and state historic and NMTCs, but also Community Development Block Grant funds, tax free bond issuances, and special purpose grants and funding sources. Mr. Calloway completed a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and completed the CPA certification process in Mississippi. His previous work experience includes financial auditing for Arthur Andersen & Co. before beginning his banking career focused on commercial lending and tax credit financing. 

Ann Hered, Butler Snow

Ann Hered has more than 10 years’ experience in federal tax law. She has represented financial institutions, community development entities and qualified borrowers in complex transactions combining one or more of the following: federal and state new markets tax credits, investment tax credits for historic rehabilitations and renewable energy projects, bond financing (including Gulf Opportunity Zone Bonds and Qualified School Construction Bonds, Qualified Zone Academy Bonds) and various state tax incentives.

She obtained a master’s degree in taxation from the University of Denver, a master’s in trade regulation from New York University, and a juris doctor from Cornell University. She is admitted to the Colorado, New York and California State bars.

David Lutz, Stinson Leonard Street 

David Lutz is the head of the tax credit finance group and is a leading authority on tax credit programs throughout the country. Mr. Lutz is an experienced tax attorney who advises investors, community development entities, developers, syndicators, lenders and other businesses in connection with new markets tax credit (NMTC) transactions, historic rehabilitation tax credit (HTC) transactions and renewable energy tax credit (RETC) transactions. Mr. Lutz uses his combination of tax and transactional experience to provide a creative, practical and efficient approach to structuring and closing tax credit transactions. He has particular expertise in state tax credits and regularly advises clients on transaction structures that are designed to facilitate the transfer of state credits or structures that combine federal and state tax credits. He is a frequent speaker on tax credit programs at conferences throughout the country. In addition, Mr. Lutz has a broad domestic and international tax background, which includes significant experience representing public companies, private equity funds and other businesses in connection with the structuring of acquisitions, dispositions and other investments.

Rob Olson, The Sherwin-Williams Company

Robert K. Olson is senior tax counsel for The Sherwin-Williams Company in Cleveland, a company engaged in the development, manufacture, distribution and sale of paints, coatings and related products. Mr. Olson is primarily responsible for managing the company’s equity investments in historic rehabilitation projects and affordable housing. Mr. Olson’s responsibilities also include tax controversy resolution at the federal, state and local levels and general tax planning. Before joining Sherwin-Williams in 1997, Mr. Olson was with Ernst & Young LLP of Cleveland. Mr. Olson holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Albion College and a juris doctor from Cornell Law School. He is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, The United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He is a member of the Tax Club of Cleveland, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Cleveland Restoration Society.
